Comprehensive fuel and biofuel testing for quality, efficiency, and compliance

Eurofins Energy and Biofuel Testing Services offers a wide range of services for various applications related to energy, fuels and byproducts:

  • Physical properties of the fuel/ash defining the quality of the fuel such as calorific value, determination of fraction sizes, durability, bulk density, ash melting behaviour, viscosity, pour point, flash point, and biogenic carbon content.
  • Chemical properties impacting the efficiency and quality of the fuel as a product and environmental properties such as CHN, S, halogens, minor and major elements/heavy metals, PAH, PCB, and dioxins.

The offering can be used for various applications:

  • Determining the market price of the fuel, both for the trader/seller and the consumer.
  • Environmental monitoring and reporting.
  • Optimising processes to achieve efficiency in both environmental and economical aspects.

Secondary and refuse-derived fuels

Timely, reliable, and meaningful fuel analysis is essential when exploring and assessing deposits, conducting quality control of fossil fuels, or utilising high-calorific waste fractions for energy recovery.

Expand_img

The demand for chemical and physical analysis is increasing - driven by the growing use of refuse-derived fuels and the introduction of renewable bio-based fuels.

Combustion products, residual materials, and by-products from thermal waste recovery or treatment also require expert analysis to prevent and minimise negative environmental impacts.

Eurofins Environment Testing laboratories supports producers of secondary fuels with expert consulting and on-site sampling for in-house quality control—particularly within the framework of supply contracts. In addition to accurate and reliable analysis, Eurofins Environment Testing offers energetic and ecotoxicological evaluation of results, as well as complex testing programmes including sampling and analysis of input materials, intermediates, final products, and degradation products.

Solid biofuels

Eurofins Environment Testing provides accredited testing and inspection services for solid biogenic fuels to ensure consistent quality, sustainability, and compliance with emission limits supporting the reliable substitution of fossil fuels with renewable bio-based alternatives.

Analysis of biogenic fuels according to established quality assurance systems

When substituting fossil fuels with renewable biogenic fuels, the following conditions, apply:

  • The producer must be able to manufacture a biogenic fuel with defined and consistent properties.
  • The consumer must be able to obtain a fuel that meets their requirements and whose quality is specified within defined limits.
  • The sustainability of the production of biogenic fuels must be ensured.

In the context of "renewable energy and CO₂ neutrality," a wide range of potential biogenic fuels are currently being evaluated against these requirements.

Eurofins Environment Testing laboratories conduct inspections of biogenic solid fuels (e.g., wood pellets, wood briquettes, wood chips) to verify whether the defined requirements regarding raw material origin, production processes, product characteristics, and quality assurance are met.

Eurofins Environment Testing laboratories support the entire process — from sampling and analysis to complete characterisation of solid biogenic fuels. This naturally also includes verification of emission limit values.
