Through testing and support services, our companies enable their clients to assess, monitor, and limit the negative impact of their activities on the environment. We also embed these values into our own actions by continuing to reduce consumption and improve environmental stewardship and energy conservation at our sites all over the world.
Our Real Estate team builds and renovates with sustainability in mind from the outset, with large investment programmes in new, better and more environmentally friendly facilities. Energy conservation is considered and encouraged in new building and laboratory design, equipment purchases, building project upgrades, and behavioural changes. Many sites have installed solar panels and are actively switching to LED lighting. Many of our companies also use, wherever possible, renewable energy. Several laboratories also use energy created by recycled heat or from waste-fired energy generators.
Eurofins companies focus on reducing consumption of essential resources as part of sustainable operating practices, and what can’t be reduced is being increasingly recycled. Many sites have recycling initiatives that go beyond what is required by their local regulations. For example, collecting organic waste for biomass production or collaborating with local schools to donate unused laboratory equipment for use in science lessons.
Sourcing renewable energy is a major part of our decarbonisation efforts. Eurofins aims to increase the percentage of renewable electricity year over year through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), Energy Attribute Certificates/Guarantees of Origin (GOs), Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Green Tariffs and on-site renewable electricity generation (e.g., solar panels).
Several Eurofins laboratories have implemented best practice training programmes related to environmental risk management, such as the safe use of chemicals and their application, proper waste disposal, autoclaving systems for decontamination, etc, as well as carrying out regular inspection and internal training on the issues of safety and the protection of the environment. Several laboratories have opted for voluntary environmental management accreditation by following international standards (such as ISO 14001).
