Electrolyte balance

Definition

The electrolyte balance is a very important parameter considering the acid-base balance (pH) within the blood of the animal. The electrolyte balance takes into account the Sodium (horse, cattle), Potassium (horse, cattle) and Chloride (horse, cattle) within the forage.

Importance

When there is a low amount of Sodium or Potassium, or a high amount of Chloride analysed within the forage over a longer period of time, the blood of the animal can become more acid which can indicate health issues such as metabolic acidosis.
