Chloride (Cl) - horses

Definition

Chloride is an essential electrolyte and mineral that helps maintain fluid balance, supports nerve and muscle function, aids digestion through stomach acid production, and contributes to kidney health. It works closely with sodium and potassium to regulate pH and hydration in animals and humans.

Importance

Chloride is of great importance with the water metabolism, recovery of the muscles after training, functioning of the kidneys and stomach acid secretion. If the body becomes too acidic with a too low pH, nutrients will be less absorbed and will cause a slower recovery after training.

Horse diet

With a normal amount of sodium in the diet, it is unlikely that there will be a chloride deficiency. When there is a sodium deficiency in the diet, there will most likely also be a chloride deficiency. Chloride can be added to the diet by means of a salt licking stone when low analysis results of chloride in the forage occur.
