Acidity (pH) - soil

Definition

Soil acidity (pH) is a key property affecting microbial life. It determines how well fungi and bacteria grow, influencing nutrient cycling and organic matter breakdown.

Importance

Fungi thrive at lower pH (~5.5), while bacteria prefer pH 6–7 and are more sensitive to changes. Higher pH speeds up organic matter mineralisation, impacting soil fertility.
